What is a "Plaintiff's Steering Committee" and what is its role in aviation accident litigation?

When a commercial airline crashes, and multiple injuries and/or fatalities occur, there are many different people with similar claims against similar defendants. Through a procedural mechanism known as "multi-district litigation", common issues of those many claims can be consolidated in one court. The individual plaintiff's attorneys, or some of them, direct the multi-district litigation through a committee of lawyers known as a "Plaintiff's Steering Committee".
