What is the "Warsaw Convention" and what does it have to do with aviation accidents?
The Warsaw Convention is a 1929 agreement that limits the liability of airlines in the event of "accidents" on international flights. In 1966, the top limit was increased to $75,000. This limit does not apply in the event of the airline's "willful misconduct", a subject that is frequently and fiercely litigated. An "accident" that is governed by the Warsaw Convention is defined as an "unexpected or unusual event that is external to the passenger."
