My wallet was recently stolen and within a week the thief tallied up large credit card charges, purchased a cell phone, applied for a VISA card, ordered plane tickets, and had a credit line approved to buy a Compaq computer. Any suggestions on how to limit the damage? |

| Before panicking, you may wind up paying at the most $50, and possibly nothing at all. Your first step is to cancel your credit cards immediately. Second step is to file a police report and send copies to the credit bureaus, credit card companies, and banks. Third, call the three national credit reporting organizations to issue a fraud alert on your name and social security number. The alert notifies any company checking your credit that your information was stolen. This also tells the company they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. If someone is using your driver's license, apply for another number. |
