Can a student sue a school official for sexual harassment?

Title IX and Section 183, two federal statutes, protect students against sexual harassment and abuse by school employees. Claims of sexual abuse by teachers and school employees have increased greatly in recent years. Monetary damages have been awarded in sexual discrimination cases brought under Title IX. At this time, students must show a pattern of abusive conduct in order to establish liability. Some courts have waived statutory time limits for filing claims involving sexual abuse of minors. The law will no doubt continue to change in the future.
