Will Your Insurance Policy Cover Your Hospital Costs?
Most people don’t think about the costs of a hospital stay. They have insurance for that, so why worry about something that will probably never happen? What many consumers don’t know is that some insurers offer policies that promise to cover these costs, but may not.
The MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company is one of those insurers. Many consumers have reported that they were promised that their hospital bills would be covered, only to find out later that they had a problem. According to the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights (FTCR), MEGA’s rates don’t even begin to cover the expenses associated with a hospital visit.
The FTCR reported that the average cost for hospital room and board was between $3,180 to $7,648, yet MEGA’s maximum payout was only $200 - $600 per day depending on the policy. Hospital stays that included treatment in the Intensive Care Unit were reported between $3,417 to $9,428 per day, yet MEGA’s maximum payout was only $600 - $1,800 per day. If you’re unlucky enough to have to stay in the hospital for a week, it will cost you $100,000 or more. MEGA’s coverage is only $4,000 - $36,000 – nowhere near the point of covering the actual costs.

Several consumers who had MEGA insurance have reported having to sell off their possessions in order to pay for the difference in coverage – something most people would never think could happen to them.
Make Sure You’re Covered
You can make sure that you’re covered by reading the fine print in your health insurance policy. Don’t assume that coverage will be based upon “the going rate” of costs, because chances are – it won’t. Many former salespeople of MEGA have reported that they were told to do whatever it took to get the sale and that they were trained more on salesmanship than they were on the actual products themselves. Even after being required to stop these types of practices, some attorneys say that the practices continue.
