Satellite service is any service provided by satellites. In general, satellite service is used to refer to television or Internet service, but the term can also be used to describe radio or telephone services as well.
Satellite service is provided by various types of satellites known as communication satellites. These artificial satellites are put into space and set to orbit, and are then used to provide radio relay technology that is used on Earth for telecommunications purposes. Satellite Internet and satellite television both offer the ability to provide services worldwide, with further reaching signals than land-bound or cable signals. Both satellite service types require the consumer to have various equipment in order to receive the signals, such as satellite dishes or boxes.
Often, users will either need to purchase this equipment or pay a monthly rental fee from the company who is providing the satellite service. Satellite Internet service, television, radio, or telephone services are all alike in that they can offer a huge range of service channels and levels of performance due to the far-reaching signals and the worldwide access. However, this type of connection is generally relatively expensive. Satellite Internet in particular may be more costly than Internet provided through a dial-up or a cable connection. However, they are the ideal solution in many areas where other types of service connections such as cable or terrestrial signals cannot be feasibly used due to terrain or geographical limitations.
Satellite service can sometimes experience delays in the transfer of the signal, and tend to be more frequently affected by weather conditions and disturbances than other, more tangible types of connections. The presence of obstructions such as a large clusters of trees can also hinder clear satellite performance. However, satellite service can be the right solution in certain situations where other connections are not possible or reasonable, or where a wide range of channel access is required.
