What is mediation?
Mediation involves a structured meeting with a person known as a “mediator” who tries to assist the parties resolve a dispute. The mediator is usually a lawyer or a retired judge. The parties generally share the expense of hiring the mediator.

Mediators frequently ask each of the parties to prepare a written statement in which they set out their version of the dispute. The mediator reviews it and gives the parties a chance to tell their story at the mediation. After learning about the dispute, the mediator will try to get the parties to adjust or settle their dispute based upon his or her assessment of the merits of the claims.
