How do I choose a mediator?
You can choose a mediator who is a specialist in the field of your dispute, or you can choose a mediator who is a specialist in dispute resolution, or you can choose a mediator who is both an expert in the subject matter of the dispute and an expert dispute resolver. Obviously, most people would choose someone who is both an expert in the field and in dispute resolution. While such professional mediators are likely to charge higher per day fees, they often may require fewer days, or help the parties fashion an better solution, and thus can be very cost effective.

If the dispute does not involve enough money to justify a major expenditure on dispute resolution, or doesn’t have an issue that is both important and difficult enough to justify a large expenditure on dispute resolution, it is usually better to choose someone who is an expert dispute resolver, rather than an expert in the subject matter. An expert dispute resolver does not decide who is "right" but helps the parties reach an agreement.
