Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect
  All States
My mom looks really thin, and she has gotten so much weaker every time I visit her at her new nursing home. She also seems a lot more suspicious of everyone lately. What are some signs that nursing home neglect and abuse could be occurring?

You are right to be concerned about the changes in your mother’s physical appearance and condition. Some of the more common signs of nursing home abuse or neglect are:

• Sudden weight loss

• Bruising

• Falls

• Bedsores

• Frequent or constant restraints

• Staff indifference

• Injury requiring emergency treatment or hospitalization

• Broken bones

• Heavy medication or sedation

• Frequently illness

If your mother also seems suspicious or withdrawn, emotional abuse might be indicated as well. It is important to go with your instincts and look into your mother’s care at her nursing home immediately. Since she may feel helpless or unable to communicate her concerns, the involvement of family members who are in the position to monitor her condition are her best hope for the best possible level of care.
