What is a sales tax? |
 |
Sales taxes are imposed at the federal, state, county, and local municipality levels. Sales taxes are typically imposed upon the purchase of goods - services are typically not subject to sales tax.
Retailers and others who purchase goods for sale to customers are typically able to obtain a re-sellers permit which enables them to buy goods without paying a sales tax - the sales tax on such goods is collected by them when their customers purchase the goods.
There is a variety of rules with respect to what goods are subject to sales tax. For example, food is typically not subject to sales tax. Some goods - such as gasoline, alcohol and tobacco - are subject to specific sales taxes.
